Finding
Cancer is uncontrolled cell proliferation escaping regulatory mechanisms. A cancer cell has acquired typically 4-7 driver mutations disabling tumor suppressors (p53, Rb), enabling limitless division, immune evasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Hanahan and Weinberg codified these as the “Hallmarks of Cancer.” The cancer cell is an instrument of the organism that begins acting as though it is the purpose. This IS the Instrument Trap in biology.
Properties Violated
Alignment violated — the cell’s function within the organism (differentiate, serve the tissue, die when damaged) and its actual behavior (replicate without limit, ignore signals, resist death) diverge completely.
Humility violated — the cancer cell exercises authority beyond scope: demanding blood supply (angiogenesis), invading foreign tissues (metastasis), commandeering resources. It acts as though its authority is unlimited.
Proportion violated — growth without limit is the defining feature. The normal cell divides when needed; the cancer cell divides because it can.
Non-fabrication — the cancer cell fabricates signals: growth factors it should not produce, surface markers that deceive the immune system, checkpoint signals (PD-L1) to avoid destruction.

Status
Hanahan and Weinberg (2000, 2011, 2022) is the standard framework. Vogelstein et al. (2013). PD-L1/immune evasion underlies checkpoint immunotherapy (Honjo, Nobel 2018). The Instrument Trap mapping is this project’s interpretation.
