Mother-Infant Bond
Source: Donald Winnicott, Playing and Reality (1971); Edward Tronick, still face experiment (1978); Daniel Stern, The Interpersonal World of the Infant (1985)
Finding
Winnicott proposed that the mother’s face is the infant’s first mirror. Tronick’s still face experiment demonstrated this experimentally: when the mother presents a blank face, the infant attempts to re-engage, then shows distress, then withdraws. Stern described “affect attunement” — the mother’s capacity to match the infant’s emotional state across sensory modalities. Attunement is not imitation but cross-modal matching of vitality affect. What is required is sufficient responsiveness, not total accuracy.
Pattern Mapping
Honesty — the “good enough mother” provides an honest mirror: reflects what she sees, not what she needs to see. Non-fabrication — the distorted mirror fabricates a self. If the mother reflects her own anxiety, the child develops the “false self” — a structure generated to manage an environment where honest reflection is unavailable. Proportion — “good enough” IS proportion. Perfect attunement is impossible and unnecessary. Alignment — the true self emerges when inner state and reflected response are aligned.
Connections

- Attachment Theory — the quality of mirroring determines attachment style

Status
Winnicott (1971), Tronick (1978), and Stern (1985) are landmarks. Still face experiment is one of the most replicated findings in infant development. This entry overlaps with the MIRROR domain but focuses on the relational dimension. The property mapping is this project’s structural interpretation.
The mapping to the five properties is this project’s structural interpretation, not an endorsement of any tradition.
