Water’s Anomalous Properties

Finding
Water violates trends expected from its periodic table position. It should be a gas at room temperature. Its boiling and melting points are anomalously high due to hydrogen bonding. It is densest at ~4C (ice floats — otherwise lakes freeze bottom-up, killing aquatic life). It has anomalously high specific heat (climate buffering), high heat of vaporization (evaporative cooling), high surface tension (capillary action), and excellent solvent properties. 74+ catalogued anomalies, all from hydrogen bonding.
Pattern Mapping
Proportion — Water’s properties connect molecular structure (H-O-H angle of 104.5 degrees, hydrogen bonding) to ecological function. One mechanism, multiple functional consequences.
Alignment — Molecular structure and macroscopic properties are consistently connected through a single physical interaction. The molecular and ecological are aligned through hydrogen bonding.
Honesty — It would be fabrication to claim water was “designed” for life. The honest statement: water’s anomalous properties are explained by hydrogen bonding, and many happen to be necessary for life as it exists. Whether this is coincidence or selection effect is an open question.
