Fine-Tuning and Anthropic Observations

Finding

Several dimensionless physical constants appear fine-tuned for complex structures and life. The strong force coupling constant, if 2% different, would prevent normal nucleosynthesis. The cosmological constant (~10^-122 in natural units) is exquisitely small — a few orders of magnitude larger and galaxies would not form. Interpretations are contested: multiverse, design, necessity, or brute fact. None is established.

Pattern Mapping

This is MYSTERY_EXPLORATION in its purest form. The observations are real; the question they pose is genuine; the honest answer is: we do not know.

Honesty — Physics states the fine-tuning observations without fabricating an answer. Each proposed explanation has strengths and weaknesses; none is established.

Non-fabrication — The temptation to declare one interpretation correct is intense because the question touches on purpose and meaning. All current interpretations are speculative.

Humility — The constants are measured with great precision; their origin is unknown. This is a structural limit on current physics.

Status

Fine-tuning observations are established physics. The anthropic principle is legitimate but contested. The multiverse hypothesis is unfalsifiable in current form. See Barrow & Tipler, The Anthropic Cosmological Principle (1986). The mapping to MYSTERY_EXPLORATION is this project’s structural interpretation.

The mapping to the five properties is this project’s structural interpretation.
