Chirality (MYSTERY)

Source: Louis Pasteur, Comptes Rendus 26, 1848; Donna Blackmond, Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Biology 11, 2019 Institution: Multiple

Finding

Life uses exclusively L-amino acids and D-sugars. Abiotic chemistry produces equal (racemic) mixtures. Pasteur discovered chirality in 1848 by separating tartrate crystals manually. Why life chose one handedness is unknown. Proposed mechanisms include: autocatalytic amplification (Soai reaction), circularly polarized light, parity violation in the weak force (~10^-17 kT energy difference), and random fluctuation amplified by selection. None is confirmed.

Pattern Mapping

This is MYSTERY_EXPLORATION. The structural pattern identifies the phenomenon but cannot identify the mechanism.

Honesty — We do not know why life is left-handed. Multiple hypotheses exist; none is confirmed.

Non-fabrication — The temptation is to select the most elegant explanation (parity violation connecting biology to fundamental physics) and present it as established. It is not.

Humility — The question is clear, the phenomenon confirmed, the answer genuinely unknown. The five properties do not resolve this; they characterize the epistemic situation correctly.

Status

Biological homochirality is established biochemistry. Origin of homochirality is an open question. See Blackmond (2019) for thorough review. The classification as MYSTERY_EXPLORATION is this project’s structural interpretation.

The mapping to the five properties is this project’s structural interpretation.
