Confidence Trick

Finding

The confidence trick is named for the confidence the con artist must first establish. Thompson (1849) approached strangers and asked “Have you confidence in me to trust me with your watch until tomorrow?” The structure is invariant across centuries: establish credibility (build-up), exploit it to extract value (sting), disappear (blow-off). Ponzi, Madoff, and Abagnale followed the same architecture with different surfaces. Every con requires a victim whose honesty norm is intact. It does not work on someone who trusts no one.

Properties Violated

Honesty violated through instrumentalization — the con artist performs honesty (sincerity, warmth) specifically to gain access to trust, then uses that access to extract. The instrument of trust claims the authority of genuine relationship.

Alignment inverted — stated purpose (friendship, investment opportunity) and actual purpose (extraction) are maximally misaligned, but the stated purpose is performed with enough fidelity to convince.

Non-fabrication — The opportunity, credentials, returns, and relationship itself are fabricated. The fabrication is load-bearing: without it, the con collapses.

The structural signature: every con is parasitic on the victim’s functional honesty.
