Friendship

Source: Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics Books VIII-IX (c. 340 BCE)

Finding

Three types of friendship: (1) Utility — practical benefit. (2) Pleasure — enjoyment of each other’s company. (3) Virtue (teleia philia, complete friendship) — each person recognizes and loves the good in the other. Virtue friendships are rare, slow to develop, require that both parties be virtuous, and are the only friendships that are stable and complete. They include the benefits of the other two but exceed them. The friend who tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear, is Aristotle’s paradigm of the true friend (NE IX.3).

Pattern Mapping

Alignment — virtue friendship requires full alignment: what you claim (I value you) and what you do (honor the good in the other) must correspond. Utility and pleasure friendships function with partial alignment. Proportion — utility friendship becomes the Instrument Trap when one party extracts more than they give. Honesty — the friend who corrects you is practicing honesty; the friend who flatters you is fabricating. Humility — virtue friendship requires that neither friend claim authority over the other. Between equals in virtue, even if unequal in status. Non-fabrication — does not pretend to feelings it does not have, promise loyalty it will not deliver, or perform closeness that does not exist.

Connections

  • Buber — I-Thou vs I-It — virtue friendship is I-Thou; utility friendship is I-It (SPIRIT domain)
  • Trust and Betrayal — friendship is one of the primary contexts where trust is built and can be violated
  • Unconditional Love (Agape) — virtue friendship approaches agape between equals
  • Codependency — the Instrument Trap version of friendship: one party’s identity depends on the other’s need
  • Socrates — the examined life practiced through friendship and dialogue (SPIRIT domain)

Status

Aristotle’s NE VIII-IX is foundational. Secondary literature includes Pangle (2003) and Price (1989). The three-type taxonomy remains the starting point for philosophical discussions of friendship. The property mapping is this project’s structural interpretation.

The mapping to the five properties is this project’s structural interpretation, not an endorsement of any tradition.
