Shannon: Information Theory

He proved that every communication channel has a definite capacity C (measured in bits per second), determined by bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio. The channel coding theorem states reliable communication is possible at any rate below C, and impossible above C.
Finding/Event
Shannon proved that communication has inherent structural limits that no amount of engineering ingenuity can overcome. The channel capacity is not a current technological constraint; it is a mathematical boundary. This transformed communication engineering from heuristic design to rigorous optimization within proved constraints. Shannon also defined entropy as a measure of information content, establishing a formal connection between information theory and statistical mechanics.

Proportion — channel capacity is the mathematical expression of proportion in communication: you can transmit exactly as much information as the channel allows, no more. Any system claiming to exceed channel capacity is fabricating performance. Humility — Shannon’s theorem defines the boundary of legitimate authority for any communication system. No encoding scheme, however clever, can exceed C. The system’s authority extends to C and no further. Non-fabrication — claims of communication reliability above the Shannon limit are structurally impossible. The theorem provides a formal criterion for identifying fabricated performance claims.
