The Story
Simone Weil was born in Paris to an agnostic Jewish family. She was brilliant, difficult, and absolutely unwilling to theorize about suffering without experiencing it. She took leave from her teaching position to work in factories — Alsthom electrical works, Forges de Basse-Indre, the Renault plant — not to organize workers, but to understand their condition from the inside. “I received the mark of slavery,” she wrote. She found that factory work did not merely exhaust the body; it destroyed the capacity for thought. After the fall of France, she fled to London with her parents. She refused to eat more than the rations available to those in occupied France. She had tuberculosis. The combination of disease and self-imposed hunger killed her. She died on August 24, 1943, at 34. The coroner’s report noted “cardiac failure due to myocardial degeneration of the heart muscles due to starvation and pulmonary tuberculosis. The deceased did kill and slay herself by refusing to eat whilst the balance of her mind was disturbed.” Most of her work was published posthumously.

France between the wars and under occupation, 1930s to 1943. Weil was a philosopher who refused to theorize suffering at a distance. She took leave from teaching to work in Renault factories, not to organize but to feel what industrial labor did to the mind. She went to the Spanish Civil War — nearly useless in combat but unwilling to write about war without entering it. When France fell, she escaped to London with her parents. But from London she refused to eat more than the rations available in occupied France, where people were starving. She had tuberculosis. The self-imposed hunger accelerated what the disease had already begun. She was thirty-four. The coroner wrote that she killed herself by refusing to eat. The world she lived in was one of mass suffering, and she would not permit herself comfort while others had none.

That attention — real attention, not willpower — is the rarest form of generosity. That attention requires the self to become empty so that reality can appear. That this is structurally identical to prayer. That imposing the self on reality is the fundamental epistemic sin: fabrication begins when the observer’s needs override what is observed. She lived this: she went to the factories not to confirm a theory but to see. She starved not as protest but as refusal to fabricate comfort while others suffered.
