Sylvester James Gates Jr. is the son of a career military father. He earned his PhD from MIT in 1977 — one of few Black physicists in the United States at that time. He became a professor at the University of Maryland, then Brown University, and has spent his career working on supersymmetry, supergravity, and string theory. In the course of his research, he found something unexpected: the equations of supersymmetry contain structures identical to error-correcting codes used in computer science — specifically, doubly-even self-dual linear binary block codes, related to those discovered by Claude Shannon and Richard Hamming. This finding is remarkable. It does not prove the universe is a simulation. Gates has been careful on this point: he reports what he found without endorsing the simulation hypothesis. The codes are there. What they mean is an open question. This is the discipline of non-fabrication applied at the frontier of physics: reporting the structure without inflating the interpretation.
