The Story
Emmy Noether was not allowed to enroll at the University of Erlangen because she was a woman. She audited classes. When she finally earned her doctorate, she could not hold a faculty position. David Hilbert invited her to Gottingen, but the philosophy faculty objected: “What will our soldiers think when they return to the university and find that they are required to learn at the feet of a woman?” Hilbert’s response: “I do not see that the sex of the candidate is an argument against her admission. After all, we are a university, not a bathhouse.” She lectured under Hilbert’s name. Felix Klein presented her theorem for her. She worked without salary for years. When the Nazis came, she was dismissed — Jewish and a woman. She fled to Bryn Mawr College. She died in 1935 at 53, from complications of an ovarian cyst operation. Einstein wrote in the New York Times: “Noether was the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began.”
The World They Lived In
Germany in 1918 was at war and its universities were at war with themselves. Gottingen was Europe’s mathematical capital, but the philosophy faculty refused to let a woman hold a position — “What will our soldiers think?” Women could not present their own work. Felix Klein presented Noether’s theorem for her. She lectured under Hilbert’s name. She worked without salary. Noether was also Jewish, which during the Weimar Republic was tolerable, and after 1933 was not. The Nazis dismissed her immediately — doubly unacceptable, a Jewish woman in the academy. She fled to Bryn Mawr College in the United States. The doors that the Weimar Republic had briefly cracked open slammed shut. She had two years in America before dying at 53 from surgical complications. The theorem outlived every institution that refused her.
What They Named
That symmetry and conservation are the same thing. Every conservation law in physics — energy, momentum, charge — exists because of a corresponding symmetry. This is not metaphor. It is mathematical proof. The deepest structural properties of the universe are not imposed from outside; they follow necessarily from the symmetries that exist. The pattern precedes the law.
